Shaw - "Gimme Shelter"
Some of you may be familiar with a band called, The Rolling Stones, or you may of heard of a singer, Mick Jagger. I ask that because as I get older, some of the older bands just aren't a part of younger peoples lives the way they were in mine. I actually owned The Rolling Stones very first american album on vinyl. The looked like another version of The Beatles. (Mick Jagger, pre-wringles)
Anyways, they performed a song called, "Gimme Shelter", which was also performed by another favorite band of mine, Grand Funk Railroad.
The opening lyrics go like this:
"Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away"
My mind started thinking about that song the other day as I was thinking about my financial situation. Let me tell you, I'm thinking a lot about that these day. I'm glad that I am too because it certainly is making me pay attention to the details and that's something I haven't been good at when it came to money matters.
Here's where my thoughts went in general. I'm quite aware too that there are many of you in our community and around the world that have a better handle on your money than I do, obviously. But as I think about it, I am so motivated these days to be out from underneath debt, any debt. I get the feeling that the less I am in debt to anyone, and the more I can become self sufficient with my finances, the better off I'll be and the better off everyone would be as we move forward with these bad economic times.
How freeing it will be to not have any threat against us because of debt. Freeing to take away any leverage someone or some company, business or even some government authority would have over us because of debt. Debt is a heavy, relentless task master and we are it's slave. The Bible says, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender". Proverbs 22:7 TNIV Oh, how true and how sad!
The Shaw family is even more resolved and committed to this challenge. But we are not just committed to the challenge itself but to the lifestyle of being without debt. What a difference it will make in our lives, in the lives of our children, our community and quite possible, a few ripple effects will even go further.
Keep on rockin' Mick!
