These days it seems like it costs MORE to eat less calories (low fat this, low carb that) or to stay in shape (gym memberships, trainers, etc.). How do you stay healthy without racking up the $$$$?

By going back to the basics like gardening you can get the benefits of both. Back when we had a garden the kids loved it because they got to pick the vegetables and they were actually excited about eating them too. Plus, its just hard work and excercise to maintain it.
Things got too busy and we had to do away with the garden for now, but we like to walk or ride bikes around our neighborhood.....and refill our water bottles from the tap

Check with your medical insurance plan to see if you receive free benefits to receive a Health Coach or reimbursements for joining a Gym. I use Capital Health Plan, and they offer both at no charge-- $150 annual reimbursement on Gym membership fees. They have many benefits to help members become more healthy and most are at no charge, or for a co-pay.

That's right Michelle, I forgot all about that! I did that a few years back and it covered the majority of my gym membership. All I had to do was print out the form, get my gym to fill it out and send it in. I found that most of the gyms in the area are covered in that program....even the one I went to in Monticello!

Vista Healthplan use to have that $150 gym membership benefit but now they've reduced it to something like a free visit to a gym.
But I took advantage of it years ago at Gold's Gym and it was sweet.

Now I just walk as much as I can and the thing that keeps me motivated is the Nike Plus device you put in your shoe and it syncs up with your ipod. I love it because it tell you how far you've walked, your time, your pace and how many calories you've burned while you walk/run. Then after I walk, I upload that info to their website which is loaded with information. You can even enter challenges with people from all over the world to keep you motivated.

The investment is $30 for the Nike+ device. You really don't need Nike+ shoes because you can buy third party holders for the device that attaches to your shoelaces. Of course, this is assuming that you have an Apple device too, like an ipod, ipod touch or iphone. Fortunately, I have a "hand-me-down" ipod from my daughter after she got an iTouch.

So walking and tennis are my low cost exercise suggestions.

Hey Jim...where can I get this Ipod device. I have been walk/running for a while now and this is something that I would like to check out. Is it pricey?

danielle... I'm really sold on my Nike + device. I've seen them at Best Buy for $19.99 which is a pretty good price.

Here is the Nike Plus website. It's really loaded with information.
