Does anyone have any ideas on what there is to do locally, or even at home that is an inexpensive way to keep kids entertained this summer?

Old Fort Park is a great place for kids to run and play. It isn't as well known as some of the other parks, so you might have it to yourself. You can also do a short history lesson - there's a sign that tells about it.

One summer when the kids were little, we really outdid ourselves doing a lot of fun activities. At the end of the summer, I asked Rachel what was her favorite thing from the whole summer, and she said it was when we were on a walk and got caught in the rain!!! Totally free, and totally unplanned. Don't plan so much that you miss out on the fun in the unexpected.

Did I already suggest going to the airport? You can see planes, and there is usually nice art in the gallery.

In August, the grapes at Windy Hill will be ripe. They're great fun to pick, delicious, and cheap.

Get a big box from an appliance store and tell them to be creative, making it into whatever they want. They can make it into a house, a puppet show stage, a prison. Haha, just kidding.

If you have a camcorder, let them create fun videos.

I like the ideas about volunteering. Surely a visit from those precious girls would brighten the day of someone who's sick or housebound.

You can always bring the kids over and they can give my horses a bath once in a while too, lol

I haven't actually read thru all 6 pages of discussion, so I'm not sure if this is redundant ( who cares, it's another post 4 ya!) Find a corner of the yard for a garden, vegetable or flower. I think it's great for kids to see how things really grow and what pride in knowing that they got to pick what to plant, planted it, watered and cared of it and saw it bloom or fruit!

Don't forget the Watermelon Festival on the 19th ! We won't be doing it this month because of the festival, but next month will start back up on the monthly Cruise- In at the Dog House..the girls can wear their poodle skirts and and we'll have a some kid activities plus all the old cars and old-time music! We had a lot of kids dancing to the 50's stuff last one, and we'll probably have hula-hoop contests etc...the next one. We're working it out to be the 3rd Saturday of each month....watch for details on FB ~ Jen

Jen,
The girls had to miss the last 50's night. They were so upset, they already had their poodle skirts out and everything. A Hula-Hoop contest would be awesom. But, I must warn you in advance, Emily a self proclaimed "Hula-Hoop" champion, LOL! I love the fact you are really bringing a little of the 50's back to Monticello. That had to be a great era for the town. OH, that's right, its a new month!!!! That means I'll be making a trip to the Doghouse after work sometime soon ~~~~ although, I may have had an extra trip or two last month, haha, but who's counting?

Go to the public library. Check out a chapter book and read it out loud together as a family. You will have to hide it so no one reads ahead when you are not looking.

Nan,

Where is Old Fort Park at? I don't think I've ever heard of that place before.

Go fishing at St. Marks and take a picnic to the wild life refuge. Check out the wildlife along the way.
